From the local community to diaspora far afield, as well as those with ancestral links to Wicklow, hundreds of varied yarn pieces made up the yarnbomb. As a legacy to this huge project, the pieces are being gradually re-assembled into large display pieces of artwork. Display: Bags that carry thoughts

Saturday, May 23, 2015 - 12:00

Come & see the display from 2013's creative project by Wicklow's elder community

WHEN  :  Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th May, 12-5pm daily

WHERE  :  Festival site @ Abbey Grounds, Abbey Street

'Bags that carry thoughts'  was a creative project run in 2013 specially for the elder members of Wicklow's community from Wicklow's Day Care Centre and St. Colman's Hospital Rathdrum, and facilitated by artist Natascha Fischell. The idea was for bags to be designed by the community's older people to 'carry' their thoughts and share their wisdom. Before the festival, workshops were run where participants were encouraged- through conversation and by exploring items commonly used in the past- to share their memories of local shops, lifestyle, their way of life and how things have changed over the years. The aim was for the workshops to progress organically as conversation develops and for participants to write down or draw some of their memories. Their combined contributions were made into one 'group' design that was printed onto shopping bags which were freely available during the Wicklow Arts Festival 2013.

Natascha Fischell studied at the National College of Art and Design and has worked for several years both as a community artist and as a tutor.
